For the last 5 years (excluding last year) I’ve worked with some amazing people on Bestival Radio, and really enjoyed it. I always thought of it as a bit of a laugh (because it was) and not really anything more than that.

Most festivals have radio stations these days! Glastonbury, Bestival, Big Chill… the list goes on. I’ve never really thought of it as real radio – being broadcast on an RSL (restricted service license) on 87.7FM normally for only 5 days, with only a 2 mile range. It’s only now that I’m running two (not on my own, as part of a team), that I am really grasping the importance of it to not only the festival and brand, but the festival goer.

It gives the brand an element of cool. It gives the festival an outlet for urgent news / schedule updates / a link to the local community. Finally it gives the <s>punters</s>, sorry, festival goers a chance to still be involved in the festival atmosphere in their tents, keep up to date with news and generally just adds another layer of entertainment to the festival.

Some festival radio stations (Worthy FM at Glastonbury for example) is taken really seriously, they have a whole team dedicated to local news/traffic/weather, and they have the same presenters on daily(ish), but that’s because it’s Glastonbury and they broadcast for like two weeks?! Glastonbury is huge and needs dedicated teams for different departments… Question is, how do you tackle a smaller festival’s radio station?

Watching Bestival grow from a small quaint boutique festival, to the not-so-boutique, kind-of-mainstream festival I’ve also experienced the change in production and staffing styles. Learnt from mentors and peers around me, and am ready to tackle running one myself.

So, this Summer, I’ll be working on Big Chill Radio (as management this year, not just a staffer like last year), and managing the first radio station for the relatively new festival, Green Man.

If you’re coming to either one of these festivals, or in fact if you are going to any festivals with radio stations, TAKE A BLOODY RADIO.

They teach each other live lessons, getting into crazy escapades and generally have a gay old time.

This also has an amazing theme tune:

<topfive>#4: Hey Arnold</topfive>
Arnold is a fourth grader in Hillwood, helping is school mates with problems. He has an American football shaped head. Slightly childish, but very well written. My favourite character, unsurprisingly, is Helga – She’s secretly in love with Arnold, but is mean mean mean and bossy bossy bossy to his face. My kind of woman.

The theme NEEDS to be remixed, it’s amazing:

<topfive>#3 Rocko’s Modern Life</topfive>

Following roughly the same double act personality traits as CatDog, Clever and slightly grumpy Rocko has moved from Australia to America, and made friends with Heffer who takes the dumb, happy go lucky role. It’s funny and laced with adult humour and intellectual jokes. Great to watch as a kid, and rewatch as an adult.

The theme tune first time round was a bit of a disaster, but the second reworking of it was a triumph! Have a listen to the opening and credits:

<topfive>#2: Kenan and Kel</topfive>

Kenan and Kel are the ultimate double act. Yes, they stick to the double act formula, but just add amazingness to the table. They were true slapstick geniuses of their time. Being known for loving his orange soda, Kel is the unwitting fool to Kenan’s usually get quick rich schemes, which obviously go horribly wrong.

Sometimes compared to the modern day Nickelodeon version of them, Drake and Josh, they are – in my eyes – incomparable. Have a look below.

Easily has the best theme tune of the selection, performed by Coolio:

<topfive>#1: Clarissa Explains It All</topfive>

This had to be my number 1 favourite 90′s Nickelodeon show. It stars Melissa Joan Hart as the funny, witty, adorably cute Clarissa who was always being adventurous and planning her life. Her plans would be spoilt by her younger brother, who she would gain to seek revenge from over and over in various humiliatingly clever ways.

This show taught me life lessons, made me laugh, and got me hooked on powerful women from a young age. It was also from this point on I vowed to follow my first crush, MJH, throughout her career.

A fun pop theme for a fun show with a fun, sexy, dreamy lead actress….
So great that I was too wasted to post a blog last night!

I’m currently in a car en route to London… Only after stopping off at three Somerset pubs on the way and a services to get a four pack. Before you ask, no, the driver isn’t drinking, but me and Ben Apples are getting hammered again.

On to yesterday… Day 3 triumphs were Black Cherry – such a shame they were on so early on the john peel stage, as they are AMAZING. After they were finished I rushed over to see my beautiful friend Anna Prior drumming for Primary 1. Lead singer was cheeky with the audience and they have a great sound.

Then I went backstage to watch the England match in a VIP bar… but the less said about that the better!

After that abysmal performance we went to the park stage, where I saw Tony Allens band, and they were grooving my heart – I think the best part of that was there wasn’t a horrible sound clash. In the Dance Village is horrible if you’re not in one tent but walking through.

I then proceeded to have a quick nap and then met up with a woman who has a lovely tankard (in joke) Nadia. We went to Crystal Castles in West Dance. First time in years I’ve raved it up (or ever) and really enjoyed myself. They work so well as a live band that I don’t think I can ever listen to their recorded stuff again. The lead singer is mental, croud surfing every other song and ripping up the drum kit at the beginning of the set.

Anyway, yesterday was defined by Stevie Wonder. What an epic man, and an epic back catalogue of music. Simply amazing. The only thing slightly not amazing is Michael Eavis joining Stevie on stage to sing Happy Birthday. Maybe not the best decision in the world of festival programming…

Then went to the Rabbit Hole and Stone Circle with Nadia (who can be part of my romcom) and her bro… Amazing night. Amazing festival.

See you next year #glasto… Now off to have a bath and watch the Doctor Who finale!

Fucking long. It’s currently 3am and I’m sat backstage at the WOW! Stage with the Craig Charles Fantasy Funk Band having just come off stage. They were AMAZING. I filmed some of it so I’l upload a video when back in London.

Upon reflection today has been torturous manic fun hell. The heat has simply killed me. Standing, not moving, standing in the sun and sweating as if it were raining on me.

First band of the day was the lightening seeds at the pyramid stage. Great set, ending with Three Lions, just wonderful.

Then went to see The Phenomenal Handclap Band on the West Holts (Jazz World) Stage. Great sound, I’m definately going to be playing them on the next BIG IN WIGAN.

Then went for a nap, food, a quick snog from a stranger and I was ready to go meet up with Rich from Lighthouses and his crew. We went to see Foals and The XX at the John Peel stage. Foals were great as expected, The XX was a complete wrong choice for 10pm… Way to mellow – people want energy not music to mong out too.

The rest of my day included other shit that is boring.

Tomorrow is due to be hotter. WTF? England match in 30 degree heat? Stevie Wonder? The Strokes? Primary 1? Black Cherry?…

… Yes please!

So my preparations yesterday included a three hour round trip to see my lovely friend Sara getting my tent back from when she used it last August for Field Day. I really shouldn’t have left it that late, but it was great to have a chat at the time we did.

I got back, did a website (yes, I did a website in one evening) and then decided that instead of getting on with my second website of the evening (this is at 2am) I should prep for Glasto! So when I say prep for Glasto, I mean spend an hour designing and constructing a SEBBYWOOD flag for my tent, like a dick.
